How to Stay Safe Meeting Someone Online
Meeting someone from the internet is normal. Doing it carefully is a small amount of planning that costs nothing and removes most of the avoidable risk.

Before
Take the time you need
Most bad experiences start with being rushed.
- • Talk long enough that the person's story stays consistent. Vague answers to ordinary questions are worth noticing.
- • Keep the conversation on the platform until you are comfortable. A quick push to move to another app is a common early pressure tactic.
- • Do a light search on the name or photos they have given you. Images that appear elsewhere under a different name are a clear warning.
- • Never send money, gift cards, crypto or one-time passwords to someone you have not met — regardless of the story attached.
Planning
Set up the meeting so you stay in control
Choose the place, the time and the exit yourself.
- • Pick a public, well-lit venue you already know, at a time when other people are around.
- • Arrange your own transport both ways so you can leave at any point.
- • Tell a friend or family member where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be back. Share your live location if that is normal for you.
- • Keep the first meeting short — a coffee with a natural end is easier to leave than a long dinner.
- • Charge your phone, and keep enough money for a ride home independent of the other person.
During and after
Watch behaviour, not promises
How someone responds to a boundary tells you more than anything on their profile.
- • Keep your drink with you and order it yourself.
- • Do not agree to move to a private location on a first meeting, however the suggestion is framed.
- • Notice inconsistencies with what you were told earlier, and take them seriously.
- • Leave if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. You do not owe an explanation, an apology or a polite ending.
- • Afterwards, block and report anyone who behaved badly so the account can be reviewed.
In an emergency: if you feel unsafe or threatened, contact the police immediately. In India, dial 112. The women's helpline is 1091 and the cyber-crime helpline is 1930. FyndMe cannot intervene in a live situation — report the member to us afterwards so we can act on the account. More detail is in the Safety Center.
