What Does Profile Verification Mean?

A verification indicator is useful, and it is routinely oversold. Here is what it can reasonably tell you about a profile, and what it cannot promise about the person behind it.

18+ only

What it is

A signal about identity

Verification is designed to answer one narrow question: is the person behind this profile the person in the photos?

  • It raises the cost of running a fake or stolen-photo profile, which is the most common form of dating fraud.
  • It gives you a small amount of extra confidence that the face you are talking to matches the face you will meet.
  • It is a per-profile step: some members complete it, others have not. A verification indicator appears on profiles that have.

What it is not

The guarantees verification does not make

This matters more than the badge itself.

  • It is not a background check, a criminal record check or an employment check.
  • It does not guarantee someone's behaviour, intentions or honesty in every interaction.
  • It does not guarantee your personal safety when you meet.
  • It says nothing about whether someone is telling the truth about their relationship status, job or plans.
Read a badge as: "this identity has been checked", never as "this person is safe". Both statements can look similar on a profile card; only the first one is supportable.

Using it well

How to weigh verification alongside everything else

Judgement, pace and safety habits do the heavy lifting.

  • Compare the profile with the conversation. Verified or not, inconsistency is the signal that matters.
  • Keep the same first-meeting precautions for everyone — public place, own transport, someone told where you are. The full list is in the checklist below.
  • Report and block anyone who behaves badly, whatever their badge status. How reporting works is described in the Safety Center.
  • If you are unsure how to plan a first meeting, use the first date safety checklist.
